SammendragTick-Borne encephalitis (TBE) is a recently introduced and emerging zoonotic disease in Western Gotaland. In the present study we investigated presence of western European subtype of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus (TBEV-Eu) in wild rodents trapped in 2008 in Western Gotaland including the south coast of lake Vänern near Kållandsö, a previously described hot spot of human TBE in Sweden. Diverse tissues (brain, liver and lung) of small rodents and beavers were homogenated, RNA was extracted and analyzed by a Real Time RT-PCR assay specific for TBEV detection. Brains from three rodents were positive for TBEV at high quantities. From two of the brains, an almost complete viral genome sequence was retrieved, showing high similarity to previously sequenced TBEV strains from ticks caught in the same area. The results are compatible with a clonal expansion of TBEV from a common viral ancestor introduced in the lake Vänern region.
